The Five Components of True Wellness
The total state of wholeness a human being can aim for is known as wellness. Although proper nutrition and sufficient exercise are crucial parts of wellness, they are just two of the five pillars that make up holistic wellness.
Physical wellness is composed of many smaller parts, like body mass index (BMI), glucose blood levels, organ system functions, musculature, endurance, and the rest. To monitor and regulate the mentioned wellness factors, it is important to take physical exams at a doctor’s office at least once a year. More than that, a physician can also refer a patient to a specialist, such as an internist or pulmonologist, if the need arises.
Emotional wellness is when an individual can both regulate and sectionize their own emotions. Emotional self-regulation is the person’s capacity to know as well as manage his own feelings to towards people, things, events and life in its entirety. It helps one determine the triggers that cause emotional issues. In the same manner, compartmentalization is a psychological dynamic that lets the person detach himself from usually damaging emotions – for instance, when a person is in the middle of a traumatic experience or reeling from its effects.
Humans are born to socialize. In short, people will reach out to one another as a need. We all look for that feeling of belonging. Positive social interactions makes us feel as though we have been rewarded, that is, by a feeling of belongingness. This simple positive reinforcement is also the factor behind toxic relationships being hazardous to health, and why people who have good friendships and social networks live happier and longer lives. Thus, to reach a state of total wellness, healthy social ties are critical.
Spiritual wellness can have a different meaning from one person to another, depending on their religious background. Nonetheless, this spirituality must be nourished. It is a way of achieving a sense of being grounded.
Lastly, the mind of a person is as diverse as his physical body. For several people, the desire for intellectual engagement and thought-provoking socialization should be given the same priority as physical health needs. A life without can never fulfill them or make them feel complete. True enough, life depends so much on learning. Every time we read science journals, hone our skills and learn new ones, or analyze classic music, we are opened up to a whole different world where we may find ideas or viewpoints that contrast our own, and then learn from that disparity. There is probably no activity as stimulating to human beings than cognitive engagement.
At the end of the day, we are all looking for complete wellness, and unless we improve ourselves in each of the above-mentioned aspects, it can never be achievable for us. There will be many temptations, but discipline very crucial.
